Clawdbot Explained

Today’s newsletter is about Clawdbot, which literally just changed it’s name to Moltbot a few hours ago. It changed name because Anthropic (the company behind Claude) asked them to.

Yep, Clawdbot(Moltbot) is actually nothing to do with Claude, so maybe the name change was a good thing.

Clawdbot is an open-source AI assistant that runs on your computer and connects to your messaging apps. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude in a browser, it can actually execute tasks on your computer, reading your email, managing your calendar, running commands, and handling workflows automatically.

Created by Peter Steinberger, founder of PSPDFKit, it's designed to work like a persistent digital employee rather than a conversational chatbot.

How It Works

Clawdbot runs as a background service on Mac, Linux, or Windows (via WSL). You connect it to messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, or Telegram, then interact with it through normal chat messages.

The system uses "skills" - modular plugins that give the AI specific capabilities:

  • Gmail and calendar management

  • Web browsing and form filling

  • File system access and organization

  • Shell command execution

  • API integrations with various services

When you send a message, the AI processes your request using models like Claude or GPT, determines what actions to take, executes them through the appropriate skills, and reports back with results.

What You Can Actually Do With It

Email Management: The AI reads incoming messages, drafts replies, schedules meetings, and manages follow-ups. Users report reducing daily email time from hours to minutes.

Calendar Coordination: It handles scheduling conflicts, finds meeting times across multiple calendars, and sends appropriate invitations and reminders.

Research and Briefings: Before meetings, it researches attendees, pulls relevant information, and creates briefing documents automatically.

Monitoring and Alerts: It watches RSS feeds, flight statuses, important email threads, or system metrics, then proactively notifies you when something needs attention.

Workflow Automation: Complex multi-step processes like invoice processing, report generation, or data collection can run automatically with minimal oversight.

Setting It Up

Requirements:

  • Mac, Linux, or Windows with WSL

  • API keys for your preferred AI model (Claude, GPT, etc.)

  • Access to messaging platforms you want to use

  • Basic command line comfort

Installation Process:

  1. Clone the repository from GitHub

  2. Run the CLI setup wizard

  3. Configure your AI model API keys

  4. Connect messaging channels

  5. Install and configure desired skills

  6. Test with basic commands

The setup takes 30-60 minutes for developers familiar with CLI tools. Non-technical users may find it challenging.

Cost Considerations

The software is free (MIT license), but you pay for underlying AI model usage. Typical costs:

  • Light users: $20-50/month

  • Moderate users: $50-150/month

  • Heavy users: $200-400/month

Costs scale with usage frequency and task complexity, since agentic workflows require many API calls.

Security and Safety

Running Clawdbot involves significant security considerations:

What It Can Access: Full shell access, file system, email, calendars, and any services you configure through skills.

Risk Mitigation: Many users run it on dedicated machines or VMs to isolate potential damage from prompt injection attacks or bugs.

Best Practices: Start with limited permissions, monitor activity logs, and gradually expand access as you build trust with the system.

Common Use Cases

For Developers: Code deployment monitoring, automated testing reports, GitHub issue management, and development environment maintenance.

For Business Users: Email triage and response, meeting preparation, expense report processing, and customer inquiry routing.

For Personal Productivity: Travel management, bill tracking, appointment scheduling, and routine task automation.

Getting Started

Recommended Approach:

  1. Start with a test environment or dedicated machine

  2. Begin with simple skills like calendar or basic email management

  3. Gradually add more complex capabilities as you understand the system

  4. Monitor costs and security carefully during initial weeks

Essential Skills to Enable First:

  • Calendar management for immediate productivity gains

  • Email reading and drafting for communication efficiency

  • Basic file operations for document management
